Susan Engel

Susan is an Associate Professor in Politics and International Studies and co-Director of the Future of Rights Centre. Her research interests focus on the impact of neoliberalism on development and international political economy.Her current research projects are on the political economy of Australian foreign economic policy and the impacts of multilateral development finance.<br>She is the author of: 'The Global Architecture of Multilateral Development Banks: A System of Debt or Development?' (Routledge, 2021) with Dr Adrian Bazbauers, and 'The World Bank and the Post-Washington Consensus in Vietnam and Indonesia: Inheritance of Loss' (Routledge, 2010). Susan co-edited 'The Routledge Handbook of Global Development' (Routledge, 2022). She has published around 35 articles and book chapters on topics including aid and development theory and practices, international financial institutions and their impacts on developing countries in sectors from infrastructure to health, the role of emotions in development programs in particular in sanitation and microfinance projects and the growth of South-South Cooperation.<br>Susan worked in the government, community, and aid sectors before becoming an academic and she plays an active role in issues of aid and development through advocacy. She volunteers with Indigo Foundation, a small, not-for-profit organisation funding community development projects in developing countries, as the partnership coordinator for the India program. She was a board member from 2002-2018. She is also on the Research Committee of Jubilee Australia. <br>Susan teaches development studies, international studies, international political economy and Model United Nations.
