Subhashini Wella Hewage

Subhashini is a Lecturer in Water Engineering at the University of South Australia. She holds a PhD in Hydrology and a Master’s in Water Resources Management from UniSA, and completed her Bachelor’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka. Subhashini is a passionate educator with extensive experience in coordinating and teaching both technical and professional engineering courses. She currently coordinates the Project Management for Engineers and Introduction to Water Engineering courses. Her teaching practice is strongly student-centred and informed by the principles of inclusive and authentic learning. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), demonstrating her commitment to excellence in university teaching and ongoing professional learning in higher education. Her research spans both technical and educational domains, with interests in stormwater management, water-sensitive urban design (WSUD), hydrologic modelling, and climate change. She is also actively engaged in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), exploring ways to enhance student engagement, academic integrity, and graduate readiness through innovative curriculum and assessment design. Water engineering and hydrology, including stormwater management, Water Sensitive Urban Design and green infrastructure (WSUD/GI), land-use and land-cover change, hydrologic modelling, flood and low-flow hydrology, and climate change impacts on water systems; Engineering education and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), with a focus on enhancing undergraduate learning; Project-based learning and authentic assessment, including the use of design projects, viva voce, and alternatives to traditional examinations; Culturally informed and inclusive engineering education, and developing students’ empathy, communication, and readiness to work with diverse communities; Industry-engaged and practice-based curriculum design, to strengthen student confidence, professional identity, and employability
