Searat Ali

Searat Ali is a Senior Lecturer in Finance at the University of Wollongong (UOW). His research focuses on corporate governance, board diversity, ESG, sustainable finance and firm risk, with particular interest in how governance and monitoring mechanisms, environmental and social performance, institutional settings and external uncertainties influence corporate decision-making, financing outcomes and sustainable business practices in Australian and international capital markets. His research also extends to responsible and reproducible research practices in finance. Searat has published extensively in leading finance, accounting and management journals, including the Journal of Financial Markets, British Accounting Review, Journal of Business Finance & Accounting, British Journal of Management, Business Strategy and the Environment, International Review of Economics & Finance, Pacific-Basin Finance Journal, Global Finance Journal, Corporate Governance: An International Review, Australian Journal of Management, Journal of Contemporary Accounting & Economics, and Research in International Business and Finance. His work has received Best Paper Awards from the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ) and the Academy of Management, as well as Most Downloaded/Cited Paper recognition from the Journal of Business Finance & Accounting. His research has also contributed to policy and professional discussions, including citations by the World Bank and a Commissioner of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and inclusion in an Asian Development Bank volume on climate change and climate finance. Searat holds several editorial, research assessment and disciplinary roles. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Economic Surveys and a Guest Editor of the Pacific-Basin Finance Journal. He serves as a Detailed Assessor for the Australian Research Council and as a research grant assessor for AFAANZ. He is also a Program Committee member for the Sydney Banking and Financial Stability Conference and has contributed to conference leadership through session chairing and research assessment. His contributions to research quality have been recognised through the AFAANZ Outstanding Reviewer Award. His research is supported by national and international collaborations and competitive funding. He was awarded a Visiting Research Fellowship at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, at Associate Professor level. He has delivered a keynote address at Nagoya City University and research seminars, workshops and researcher-development sessions at universities in Australia, Finland, and the United Kingdom. His international collaborations span Europe, Asia, the United States, the Middle East and Australia and have generated high-quality publications, research projects and continuing institutional partnerships. A significant part of Searat’s work involves research supervision, mentoring and researcher development. He supervises PhD and Honours researchers in corporate governance, ESG, sustainable finance, environmental finance and firm risk, and has supported multiple candidates from research design through to thesis completion and publication. As UOW Node Leader and Vice President (Communications) within the InSPiR2eS Centre for Responsible Science, he contributes to initiatives promoting rigorous, reproducible and responsible research practices and supports researcher capability through the Pitching Research Framework, research competitions, workshops and open research-training resources. Searat is also an award-winning educator with teaching expertise in corporate and sustainable finance. He designed and introduced UOW subjects in Socially Responsible Finance and Sustainable Finance, integrating industry data, professional curricula, technology-enhanced learning and applied assessment. His curriculum leadership contributed to recognition of UOW’s Bachelor of Business (Finance) and Master of Applied Finance through the CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing Recognition Program. His teaching has been recognised through the UOW Vice-Chancellor’s Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning Award and five consecutive OCTAL nominations. He is a Fellow of the Wollongong Academy for Tertiary Teaching and Learning Excellence and an accredited reviewer and mentor of teaching and educational practice. Searat has also contributed to broader academic leadership and service at UOW, including serving as Interim Head of Postgraduate Studies in the School of Business, Academic Advisor and Program Director for the Financial Planning major, Academic Promotion Mentor, and member of teaching-award review panel. He maintains strong engagement with professional bodies and industry and has helped create scholarships, professional-development opportunities and international learning experiences for students. Searat holds a PhD in Finance from Griffith University, where his doctoral research examined corporate governance and firm risk and was supported by Australian Government postgraduate scholarships.
