Rhonda Sharp

Professor Rhonda Sharp is an adjunct at the University of South Australia. She was formerly a Research Chair and Professor of Economics at the Hawke Research Institute, University of South Australia. She is also a member, and a past Director, of the Research Centre for Gender Studies which is key concentration in the Hawke Research Institute. Professor Sharp's work on gender, and government policies and budgets began in the mid 1980s when she developed the framework for Australia's first state government level 'gender -responsive budget' initiative in South Australia. Over the past 25 years she has furthered her work of integrating a gender perspective into economic and social policies through research, writing and working with governments, NGOS and international organizations. She was co-author of one of the earliest books on women and Australian economic policies- Shortchanged: Women and Economic Policies (with R Broomhill, Allen and Unwin). She was a founding member and later President of the International Association for Feminist Economics. She served as a member of the UN Expert Group, Financing Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment and a contributor to its report. She is a member of the gender panel of the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and has been appointed as a board member on state government authorities in areas of transport, superannuation and social justice. In 2012 Professor Sharp was awarded a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours for her services to education as an academic and a researcher and to the study of economics and women. In 2003 she was awarded the Centenary Federation Medal by the Australian Government for services to education and society.
