Mistyka Schar

Dr Schar is an accomplished speech pathologist with extensive experience in the assessment and management of swallowing disorders (dysphagia) in adults, across both hospital and community settings. Her clinical practice in Head and Neck Cancer, neurological conditions, and the Intensive Care Unit was centred on a patient-centric approach, delivering individualised management in complex swallowing contexts. Her PhD focused on the clinical translation of pharyngeal manometry, a catheter-based assessment of swallowing biomechanics, to guide management decisions. Through her research, she helped bridge the gap between innovative diagnostic technology and real-world clinical applications, supporting the integration of advanced assessments into dysphagia patient care. Beyond her clinical and research roles, Dr Schar is a passionate educator and highly dedicated to teaching and delivering workshops nationally and internationally. Her authentic teaching style is grounded in real-world clinical experience and aims to empower the next generation of speech pathologists with evidence-based knowledge, practical clinical skills, and a commitment to compassionate care for patients with dysphagia. Her leadership in education aims to help advance the future of dysphagia management, ensuring that real benefits are experienced by those people living with dysphagia. Dr Schar is continuing her clinical research projects in pharyngeal manometry applications in collaboration with St. George's Hospital in Sydney and the University of Leuven in Belgium. Currently, Dr Schar teaches the swallowing curriculum and Research Honours courses.
