Professor Mervyn Lewis is Emeritus Professor in the University of South Australia, and until his retirement in December 2013 he was Professor of Banking and Finance in UniSA Business. Before joining UniSA in 1996, Professor Lewis held an endowed Chair at the University of Nottingham for twelve years as the Midland Bank Professor of Money and Banking. Professor Lewis obtained a First Class Honours Degree in Economics and a PhD from the University of Adelaide. Throughout his long and distinguished career he has been an active researcher, publishing 28 Tier 1 books, 72 journal articles and 94 book chapters. On two occasions he was the winner of the Business Division’s Senior Research Excellence Award. Visiting professorships have been held at two Australian universities, eleven overseas universities and at the Bank of England. In 1986 he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (FASSA). In 2005, Professor Lewis’s book, co-authored with Darrin Grimsey, Public Private Partnerships: the Worldwide Revolution in Infrastructure Provision and Project Finance (2004) won the $30,000 Blake Dawson Waldron Prize for Business Literature, and in 2009 he was appointed the inaugural Securities Commission Malaysia-University of Malaya Visiting Professor in Islamic Finance. Previously, in 2004, Professor Lewis was awarded an Australian Research Council (ARC) Strategic Partnerships with Industry – Research and Training (SPIRT) Grant to investigate incentives to low cost housing in South Australia. Professor Lewis’s research has embraced a wide range of topics in monetary economics and global finance, and he is a recognized expert in Islamic finance. As well as being in Who’s Who in Australia since 2001, his biographical details have been listed in Debrett’s People of Today continuously from 1990 to 2015 (one of the few resident Australians still adjudged one of ‘Britain’s most notable and successful people’).
