Research interests
My interests are centered around the interaction of electromagnetic fields with complex systems, including their modelling, design, fabrication, characterisation and application. I have advanced knowledge in a wide variety of areas, including self-assembled metamaterials, near-field imaging, plasmonic resonators and materials, opto-thermal coatings, and neuromorphic computing. I have contributed to industrial collaborations in Australia and the UK, and I am a consultant to the building industry on glazing and facade performance.
Since joining UTS as a lecturer in 2007, I have served in leadership positions in Physics including undergraduate Program Director and Discipline Leader. I have also served as chair for the NSW Australian Institute of Physics, and I am a senior member of Optica and SPIE. I have held visiting positions at the Fraunhofer Institute Jena (2001) and University of Southampton (2008).
I am committed to education that is engaging and develops deep understanding, with awards for dedicated service to outreach with the Science Teachers Assocation NSW, and for innovative teaching in Maths and Physical Sciences. I enjoy mentoring research students to develop technical, research and communication skills.
