Lisa Nivison-Smith

My research interests lie in improving early detection, diagnosis and understanding of retinal disease, particularly macular degeneration. Using advanced retinal imaging and sophisticated image analysis techniques, we work to better understand the pathogenesis of macular degeneration and identify new biomarkers or new clinical tests that can help improve the care of people with macular degeneration and prevent vision loss. I also work to understand related outer retina and photoreceptor degenerations such as Retinitis Pigmentosa and collaborate with bionic eye engineers at UNSW to design devices that account for retinal remodelling and make them more effective at restoring sight advanced eye imaging technologies. We collaborate closely with public and private optometry and ophthalmology clinics in Australia as well as other research groups in the USA, Italy, India, Singapore and Hong Kong.
