Liangbo Ma

My research focuses on how managers respond to governance and information-based incentives. I study how changes in external monitoring, investor information acquisition, and institutional environments influence managerial reporting choices, corporate policies, and financial outcomes. My work integrates accounting, finance, and corporate governance to examine strategic managerial responses across a range of settings, including common ownership, investor site visits, financial reporting, earnings management, corporate financial distress, tax avoidance, and corporate sustainability. Rather than viewing governance mechanisms as affecting corporate outcomes directly, my research investigates the economic mechanisms through which they reshape managerial incentives and decision-making. My research employs large archival datasets, causal inference techniques, and machine learning methods to address questions of practical relevance to regulators, investors, and corporate decision-makers. Collectively, these studies contribute to a broader research agenda on managerial behaviour, corporate reporting, and the role of information in capital markets.
