Her program of research makes a significant contribution to new knowledge on how digital technologies are reshaping learning, education systems, and the governance of children’s digital lives. Her research predominantly utilises qualitative and mixed methodologies, guided by sociological and psychology informed theories. It demonstrates impact in advancing theory as well as practical contributions to the development of national legislation, education policy, and understanding of children’s use of digital technologies in the wider community. Karley leads nationally significant research collaborations that bring together researchers, educators, government agencies, and industry partners to address emerging challenges associated with digital technologies and education. She is a Chief Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child, where she co-leads the Educated research program focused on children's digital data, rights, and education. She also currently holds two NSW Department of Education Screen Use and Addiction Fund grants, one as co-lead of a project titled, Level Up - Understanding Teen Videogame Play, and another as CI on a project titled, Best Practice in Screen Use for Education. Her work has informed policy, practice, and public debate through collaborations with organisations including the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, ACARA, eSafety Commissioner, and state education departments.
