Research interests
I am an award-wining historian of Australia and other British settler societies. I joined UOW in 2014. Previously I held a Monash Fellowship at Monash University and an ARC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Melbourne. My research ranges widely across histories of race, gender, science and reproduction from the mid-nineteenth century into the recent past, moving across Britain, New Zealand and North America as well as Australia. I have particular interests in whiteness, settler colonialism and biopolitics, and the history of eugenics. My work has also explored the place of Indigenous peoples in transnational history. I am the co-editor of numerous collections including Creating White Australia (2009), Reorienting Whiteness (2009), Indigenous Networks (2014) and Colonial Formations (2021). My most recent book, Taking to the Field: A History of Australian Women in Science (Monash University Publishing, 2023), won the 2025 Ernest Scott prize for history.
