James MacGibbon

James MacGibbon (he/him) is a social and behavioural scientist at UNSW's Centre for Social Research in Health researching sexual health and wellbeing among gay, bi+ and queer people, and men who have sex with men. With a commitment to collaboration and interdisciplinary research, James works alongside community and public health stakeholders to advance social research concerning testing, prevention and treatment of HIV and sexually transmissible infections (STIs). James' research program includes monitoring behavioural trends in sexual practices, community perceptions of HIV treatment as prevention, and attitudes towards prevention technologies such as HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and antibiotics for the prevention of STIs (Doxy-PEP). In 2022, James led Australia's first social and behavioural study of mpox (formerly monkeypox), providing critical insights into community awareness of mpox and vaccination acceptance. As an Associate of the Australian Human Rights Institute, James leads research concerning bodily autonomy and male circumcision, addressing fundamental questions about individual rights and bodily integrity.
