I am concerned with the gendering of occupational categories that have emerged in conjunction with economic liberalisation and bureaucratic consolidation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. My PhD thesis and subsequent work have examined the spatial and temporal aspects of women's and men's work, including concepts and categories of skill, technology, and specialist knowledge in textile factories of Ottoman Western Anatolia and Western India.
