A scholar of contemporary Shi‘ism, my main research interests lie with clerical authority (the marja'iyya) and its transnational networks, Shi‘i communities and institutions in Britain, contemporary Shi‘i philanthropy, as well as Shi‘i Islamist movements in both Iraq and pre-revolutionary Iran. I am also interested in Sunni-Shi‘i relations, especially in European contexts. Currently, I am also conducting research on transnational community building amongst Khoja Shi‘a Ithna-Asheri Muslim communities.
