Dr Rachel Rowe

My research explores knowledge-making, power, and resistance in public health, social policy, and welfare systems. I employ multidisciplinary approaches drawing on sociology, political economy, public health, media studies, and science and technology studies. My current focus is on novel data-intensive and algorithmic technologies, such as automated assessment and predictive analytics, with a particular interest in their implications for health and social equity. I combine my experience in policy, research, and project management within community health and NSW Health to produce grounded, impactful research and teaching. Before joining UNSW, I worked for a decade with culturally and linguistically diverse communities and alcohol and other drug services to address policy and structural barriers, stigma and discrimination, and to improve cultural capability and equity. public health, science and technology policy, political economy, digital health technologies, social studies of finance, harm reduction, economic sociology.
