Dongjoo Choi

Dr. Choi's research program focuses on the functional heterogeneity of glial cells, particularly astrocytes and microglia, in neurodegenerative diseases and brain tumors. His lab investigates novel subpopulations of reactive astrocytes that emerge in models of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, aiming to understand how these glial states influence disease onset, progression, and repair. Through, in vivo disease modeling, single-cell transcriptomics, and genetic manipulation, the team seeks to define astrocyte-specific molecular programs that may serve as therapeutic targets. Another central theme is the bidirectional crosstalk between reactive astrocytes and microglia in diseased brain environments. By combining live imaging, molecular profiling, and cell-type-specific interventions, the lab studies how glial interactions shape neuroinflammation, synaptic integrity, and neuronal survival. A third research area focuses on glioblastoma, where the team investigates how the glial microenvironment regulates glioma stem-like cells (GSC)-derived GBM behavior, treatment resistance, and recurrence. These projects use orthotopic tumor models and transcriptomic approaches to dissect glia–tumor interactions. Students participating in tutorials will gain hands-on experience in genetic models, molecular and cellular neuroscience, and high-resolution imaging techniques. Projects can be tailored to student interests, ranging from neurodegenerative disease mechanisms to tumor microenvironment dynamics. The lab provides a collaborative, interdisciplinary setting ideal for trainees interested in glial biology, neural circuits, and translational neuroscience.
