Claire Lowrie

I am a historian of colonial Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and the Philippines) and northern Australia. My research examines how ideas about climate, environment, race, health, and food shaped labour regimes and everyday life across colonial societies. I have previously worked at the University of Sydney, the University of Newcastle (Australia) and the University of Auckland. Research areas: Colonial Southeast Asia; tropical Australia; history of science, medicine and health; climate and environmental history; labour, migration, and mobility; food history and food provisioning technologies; race and gender in colonial societies. Teaching specialisations: Australian and Southeast Asian history, global and transnational history, labour history, environmental history and the history of colonialism and imperialism.
