Christopher Cvitanovic

Dr Chris Cvitanovic is a marine social scientist whose research focuses on improving how knowledge is generated, mobilised and applied to address complex marine and coastal sustainability challenges. Working at the intersection of science, policy and practice, he collaborates with governments, communities and other partners to enable evidence-informed decision-making and support sustainable ocean futures. He currently leads research projects across Australia and the Indo-Pacific that seek to help people, institutions and governance systems respond more effectively to environmental change and uncertainty. Chris’ research is organised around three interconnected themes: Theme 1: Knowledge Exchange and Evidence-Informed Decision-Making This work examines the relationships, processes and institutions that connect science, policy and practice, with a focus on knowledge brokering, co-production and participatory reseacrh approaches. Through this research, Chris seeks to understand how diverse forms of knowledge can be effectively integrated into decision-making processes, helping governments, communities and organisations make more informed and equitable decisions. Theme 2: Marine Governance and Sustainability Transformations Working across areas such as fisheries, conservation, coastal management and sustainable development, Chris examines the governance arrangements needed to navigate complexity, competing interests and environmental change. A particular focus is identifying practical approaches that support more adaptive, inclusive and effective decision-making for sustainable ocean futures. Theme 3: Anticipatory Governance and Climate Futures As marine and coastal systems face increasing pressures from climate change and other global challenges, this work seeks to strengthen the capacity of governments, communities and organisations to anticipate future risks and opportunities. Drawing on futures thinking, scenario planning and climate adaptation research, Chris develops and applies approaches that help decision-makers move from reacting to change towards proactively shaping resilient and sustainable futures.
