Research interests
Professor Yecies has over 30 years’ experience teaching and researching on transnational film, digital and social media industries, and cultural policy across the wider Asian region. He has strong links with a range of community organizations, startup enterprises, creative practitioners, and academics, and is committed to cooperative learning and research. In addition to publishing over 100 high-impact refereed academic papers and book chapters, he is the author of the books: South Korea’s Webtooniverse and the Digital Comic Revolution (2021), The Changing Face of Korean Cinema, 1960-2015 (2016), and Korea’s Occupied Cinemas, 1893-1948 (2011) – with Ae-Gyung Shim, and Willing collaborators: Foreign partners in Chinese media (2018) – co-edited with Michael Keane and Terry Flew.
International collaborations supported by research grants from the Australia Research Council, Korea Foundation, Australia–Korea Foundation, Academy of Korean Studies and Asia Research Fund have facilitated the publication of numerous book chapters, including: Cultural Exports, Creative Strategies and Collaborations in the Mainland Chinese Market (2018); Reconceptualising Film Policies (2017); The Handbook of China’s Cultural and Creative Industries (2016); Reviews on the International Cultural Markets (2016, Beijing Capital University of Economics and Business); Film Marketing into the Twenty-First Century (2015); and Creative Media in China (2014, China Social Sciences Academic Press).
Currently, Professor Yecies is leading the 23-member project team for the Australian Research Council Linkage Project “Empowering Australia’s Visual Arts via Creative Blockchain Opportunities” - (LP210300009, $870,000 cash plus $1.83 million in in-kind contributions, 2023-2026). Previously, he was the Lead Chief Investigator on the Australian Research Council Discovery Project “Mobile Webtoons: Creative Innovation in a New Digital Economy” (2018-2020); and a chief investigator on the Australian Research Council Discovery Project “Digital China: From Cultural Presence to Innovative Nation” (2017-2019); Australian Research Council Discovery Project “Willing collaborators: Negotiating Change in East Asian Media Production” (2014-2017); 2015 UoW Global Challenges initiative “Creative Responses to the Broadband-Empowered Digital Economy: Modelling Innovation in Korea”; and 2016 Council for Australian–Arab Relations study “Networking Women Entrepreneurs in Sydney and Dubai”.
